DNPA Code of Ethics

The Digital News Publishers Association (DNPA) has voluntarily crafted a Code of Ethics for its members, demonstrating a steadfast commitment to responsible digital publishing. Upholding our Constitutionally mandated freedoms, particularly Article 19(1)(a), remains paramount. DNPA vigilantly reviews and scrutinizes any developments that may impede the gathering and dissemination of news and current affairs, reaffirming our dedication to journalistic integrity and the public’s right to information.

This Code outlines elevated standards, ethics, and practices in digital news publishing, emphasizing our respect for the editorial and content independence of publishers. DNPA does not intervene in the day-to-day operations of its members, who maintain complete autonomy.

The fundamental principles of the Code of Ethics encompass maintaining the integrity of digital publishing standards and safeguarding the independence of journalists, content entities, and publishers. DNPA members operate within the framework of Indian law, including the Constitution, media-related legislation, and relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code, Criminal Procedure Code, and the Information Technology Act of 2000.

We adhere rigorously to accepted norms of journalistic ethics and professionalism, upholding accuracy, transparency, and fairness. Members are obligated to abstain from publishing inaccurate, baseless, or distorted material, with pre-publication verification as a mandatory practice. Defamatory content is strictly prohibited, and compliance with applicable laws and rules is imperative.

Regarding the right of reply, DNPA ensures that news reports and articles incorporate the comments or perspectives of individuals or parties implicated in allegations. Additionally, updates to news items are promptly provided upon request, with due acknowledgment of the date of update.

In cases where misinformation is identified, DNPA members are committed to taking corrective action, including editing or deleting erroneous content upon notification by affected parties.

Respect for intellectual property rights is paramount, with adherence to copyright laws and acknowledgment of ownership rights for all material used. DNPA members respect trade and service marks of third parties and promptly address any instances of intellectual property infringement.

We exercise caution in reporting sensitive matters such as crime, preserving the presumption of innocence and avoiding unfounded speculation. Special attention is given to reporting on issues such as sexual harassment, child abuse, and communal disputes, ensuring factual and unbiased coverage while upholding legal and ethical standards.

DNPA members uphold a robust grievance redressal mechanism, following guidelines outlined in the Information Technology Act of 2000. Training and awareness programs are conducted regularly to educate editorial staff on existing laws and best practices, fostering responsible and ethical journalism.

Our commitment to privacy rights, particularly for individuals not in public life, remains unwavering. DNPA prioritizes ethical reporting on matters related to courts and judicial proceedings, respecting legislative privileges and ensuring balanced coverage.

DNPA is dedicated to promoting professionalism, integrity, and accountability in digital news publishing, serving the public interest and upholding the principles of democracy and free speech.
